We have been working with the following questions lately: What’s the weather like? and What’s Croatia like?. This is a popular way for you to tell somebody about that thing or person.
And these questions with the word “like” often confuse students. This video explains that.
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and here we have lots of gorgeous images put together into this nice video! Listen carefully and notice how the words are combined, and how the superlatives are used to describe this place full of life, a place that lift your spirits sky high!
But let’s take a closer look at these two commonly confused words.
We use between to refer to two things which are clearly separated. We use among to talk about things which are not clearly separated because they are part of a group or crowd or mass of objects:
There’s a common and oddly persistent belief that between should be used only when there are two elements, and among should be used when there are more than two elements. But this rule is a myth—or, to be more charitable, it’s a great oversimplification. You can use between when there are more than two elements involved:
Our holiday house is between the mountains and the sea. (the mountains are on one side and the sea is on the other)
The ancient fountain was hidden among the trees. (surrounded by trees)
In fact, you can use between for any number of elements, as long as all the elements are separate and distinct. According to The Chicago Manual of Style, you can even use between when “multiple one-to-one relationships are understood from the context”:
Negotiations between the member states collapsed last night.When describing spatial relationships, between usually means in the middle of something, or in the space restricted by something:
He drove too quickly between the cars.When to Use Among
Among is used when talking about people or things that are not distinct and are viewed as a group:
There wasn’t much unity among the council members.Among could indicate that something belongs to a group:
She only ever felt comfortable when she was among her friends.When referring to spatial relationships, among tells us that something is surrounded by something else:
Paula always wanted to go swimming among dolphins.Examples

Ainda é uma dessas palavras que deixa muita gente confusa. Afinal, dependendo do ainda, temos que usar palavras diferentes em inglês. Iniciamos estudando o uso do already e do yet em algumas situações. Reveja aqui e aqui. Hoje acrescentaremos o even.
Então! Veja as sentenças abaixo:
Como você pode ver, em todas as sentenças, a palavra ainda é usada, mas em inglês, teremos que usar uma palavra diferente para cada ainda.
Na sentença (1) temos … não … ainda. Ou seja, é uma sentença negativa. Neste caso, devemos usar o yet. Assim, será: We haven’t been there yet.
Ja a sentença (2) é uma afirmação com sentido de continuidade. Quando for assim, o ainda em inglês será still. Logo: She still lives there.
Observe que na sentença (3) estamos fazendo uma comparação! Quando for assim, para o ainda, usaremos o even. Veja alguns exemplos, ainda melhor que = even better than; ainda mais gordo que = even fatter than; ainda mais inteligente que = even more intelligent than. Nossa sentença em inglês fica assim: He’s even taller than his brother.
Na última sentença, temos uma expressão bastante comum em português: Ainda bem que…. Para esta, há dois jeitos: it’s a good job that… ou it’s just as well…. Desta forma, nossa sentença poderá ser construída de dois modos: It’s a good job that you didn’t tell them anything ou It’s just as well you didn’t tell them anything.
