Hey, people!

O sábado chegou! Vamos aproveitar o dia para treinar os superlativos em inglês? Releia o post de ontem e complete as frases abaixo com a opção correta!

Superlatives: the shortest day, closest friends…

Olá pessoal! No post do primeiro dia de inverno, apareceram as palavras “shortest day of the year” e  “those closest to us”. Vamos aprender os superlativos?

O superlativo é usado sempre que queremos dizer que uma coisa é “o mais…” “a mais…”, “o… mais…”, “a… mais…”.

Vejam estes exemplos:

Este livro é o mais interessante que eu já li.

Ela é a mais bonita da escola.

Este é o anel mais caro que eles têm.

Aquele é o prédio mais velho da cidade.

Ele é o garoto mais alto da classe.

Porém, em Português também temos exceção, como abaixo:

Este é o maior prédio do mundo.

Este é o pior filme que eu já vi.

É comum que crianças que estão aprendendo a falar, digam “mais grande” ou “mais ruim”, pois tentam seguir um padrão. Porém, rapidamente alguém corrige: não falamos “mais grande” ou “mais ruim” e sim “maior” e “pior”.

Em inglês estes casos também acontecem. Vejam as frases acima em inglês:

This book is the most interesting I’ve ever read.

She is the most beautiful at school.

This is the most expensive ring they have.

That is the oldest building in town.

He is the tallest boy in the class.

Percebam então que em inglês existem duas maneiras de se formar o superlativo. Alguns casos vamos usar “the most…” (+ adjetivo), e em outros vamos usar o adjetivo terminando com “-est”.

Sendo assim, a dúvida do estudante de inglês é simples: quando uso um ou o outro?

Neste caso, temos que tentar aprender assim como aprendemos o português. Aprendemos por exemplo, que não dizemos “o mais grande” e sim “o maior”. Assim, como não falamos “the most big” e sim “the biggest”. Ou seja, aprendemos pelo uso, prestando atenção nas ocorrências.

Agora, como dica, observem que, normalmente, os adjetivos que são mais curtos levam o “-est” no final. Vejam alguns exemplos comuns:

the oldest (o mais velho)

the cheapest (o mais barato)

the deepest (o mais fundo)

the fastest (o mais rápido)

the longest (o mais longo)

the hottest (o mais quente)

the biggest (o maior)

Já os adjetivos longos, o superlativo é contruído com “the most…” como podemos observar abaixo:

the most expensive (o mais caro)

the most beautiful (o mais bonito)

the most popular (o mais popular)

the most boring (o mais chato)

E como em português, existem aquelas formas de superlativo que fogem à regra, como:

bom (good)  / o melhor = the best (e não ‘the goodest’)

ruim  (bad) / o pior = the worst (e não ‘the baddest’)
