Sink or swim?

Embora literalmente, sink or swim signifique afundar ou nadar, a expressão não deve ser entendida assim.

A expressão sink or swim passa a ideia de uma situação na qual devemos ir atrás do sucesso por nossos próprios esforços, ou então poderemos falhar. Ou ainda, correremos riscos, quando as alternativas são segurança e sucesso, ou perda e fracasso. Assim, podemos entendê-la como “tudo ou nada“, “ganhar ou perder“, “pegar ou largar” e “vencer ou não”. Veja os exemplos:

  • My boss gave me no help when I started my new job. I was just left to sink or swim. (Meu chefe não me deu nenhuma ajuda quando comecei meu novo emprego. Era pegar ou largar.)
  • Our trainees are put to the test as soon as they join the company. For them, it is sink or swim. (Nossos estagiários são colocados à prova assim que eles chegam à empresa. Para eles, é tudo ou nada.)
  • Sales is not an easy job here. We give you two weeks training, then it’s sink or swim. (Vendas não é um serviço fácil por aqui. Nós te damos duas semanas de treinamento, depois é pegar ou largar.)
  • Newcomers are given no training. They are simply left to sink or swim. (Os novatos não recebem nenhum treinamento. Ou eles se viram ou pedem para sair.)

Meaning/Usage: To succeed at something; to arrive

In the literal meaning, to say a person arrived. But another common meaning is to say someone succeeded at something.

“You made it! I didn’t think you were going to show up.”

“I can’t believe you made it. It was a difficult task.”

“I made it in life”

“I made it” is used with a reference to a specific time, often implicitly now or today, and if you want to refer to something that happened in the past. For example, one would say “I made it” after climbing to the peak of a mountain, or when saying “I made it as a professional swimmer on 2 January 1982 when I won the gold metal.” 

“I have made it” is used without a specific reference to time. Thus, it means the event happened at some point in the past but the speaker isn’t being explicit about time. You are telling someone that, in the grand scheme of your life, you have done something.

For example, “I have made it as a professional swimmer”, means the speaker succeeded in becoming a professional swimmer but isn’t being specific about the time that he succeeded.

It’s a very subtle difference. Here are some more examples:

Today I challenged myself to run a mile, and I made it.

I have always wanted to swim across the river, and I’ve made it!

At the other day we learnt how to use: “Off we go!” Right before saying that, you may say: “All set!”

US  Informal   prepared; ready  (Webster’s New World College Dictionary, 4th Edition).

ARE YOU (ALL) SET?
It means – 01: Do you have everything you need? Are you ready?
               – 02: Have you finished eating, and are you ready for the bill?

Example: – Are you all set? Are you bringing everything you need to finish the project? / -Yes, we’re set! Let’s go!
Tradução: Tudo pronto? Tudo certo?
