Pronunciation! Truck as in up!

The Food Truck Festival happened in Blumenau this weekend. A lot of people were very excited about it and we heard them saying the word truck in a lot of different ways 😮 I know, I know! If on the one hand, there is a lot of controversy about foreign words, on the other hand, you have to agree that it is at our advantage to hear the right pronunciation:

  • we learn the right way
  • people around us learn the right way
  • when you go on a trip abroad, people understand you
  • we help our country, because more and more people are going to speak better English!

“Welcome aboard” is what the pilot says before starting a trip, and it means

Bem-vindo(a) a bordo!

That’s how I feel today! It’s like a very special first time trip to another planet!

Mark Pagel: How language transformed humanity

Hey you guys! This is a very good talk about language as a piece of “social technology“ for enhancing the benefits of cooperation, for reaching agreements, for striking deals and for coordinating our activities. Biologist. Mark Pagel adds that not having language is like a bird without wings. Wings allow birds to exploit, as well as language opens up the sphere of cooperation for humans to exploit. He says that once we have language, we can put our ideas together and cooperate to have a prosperity that we couldn’t have before we acquired it. But he also suggests that different languages impose a barrier to coopperation and that our modern world now is confronting us with the dilemma: One world. One language?
