Look forward to is a phrasal verb so very much used, and it means to be excited and pleased about something that is going to happen:

I’m really looking forward to our vacation.

My mother says she’s looking forward to meeting you.

Brazilians celebrated Valentine’s Day yesterday! Are you still in a mood for love?

Do you know how to say “amor à primeira vista” in English? It’s “love at first sight”.

Let’s look at some examples.

Now, if we want to say “apaixonar-se à primeira vista”, we should say “to fall in love at first sight”.

When you meet her, I’m sure you will fall in love at first sight. Quando você conhecê-la, tenho certeza que vai se apaixonar à primeira vista.

How do people fall in love at first sight? I just don’t get it.  Como pessoas se apaixonam à primeira vista? Eu simplesmente não entendo.

Happy Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is a time when people show feelings of love, affection and friendship. It is celebrated in many countries, and in most of them falls on February 14 each year. Traditionally people send a valentine (=special card) to someone they love, often without saying who the card is from. They may also send flowers, especially red roses, or other presents as a sign of love.

Sink or swim?

Embora literalmente, sink or swim signifique afundar ou nadar, a expressão não deve ser entendida assim.

A expressão sink or swim passa a ideia de uma situação na qual devemos ir atrás do sucesso por nossos próprios esforços, ou então poderemos falhar. Ou ainda, correremos riscos, quando as alternativas são segurança e sucesso, ou perda e fracasso. Assim, podemos entendê-la como “tudo ou nada“, “ganhar ou perder“, “pegar ou largar” e “vencer ou não”. Veja os exemplos:

  • My boss gave me no help when I started my new job. I was just left to sink or swim. (Meu chefe não me deu nenhuma ajuda quando comecei meu novo emprego. Era pegar ou largar.)
  • Our trainees are put to the test as soon as they join the company. For them, it is sink or swim. (Nossos estagiários são colocados à prova assim que eles chegam à empresa. Para eles, é tudo ou nada.)
  • Sales is not an easy job here. We give you two weeks training, then it’s sink or swim. (Vendas não é um serviço fácil por aqui. Nós te damos duas semanas de treinamento, depois é pegar ou largar.)
  • Newcomers are given no training. They are simply left to sink or swim. (Os novatos não recebem nenhum treinamento. Ou eles se viram ou pedem para sair.)
