It doesn’t hurt to ask!

Have you heard this phrase: “It doesn’t hurt to ask, or “It doesn’t hurt to say?

Watch the video below. Hermann finally has some free time to relax and sit around doing nothing, but his wife seems to have different plans. Listen carefully to what she says to him.

She says: “It wouldn’t hurt if you go for a walk.”

She means that he should go for a walk. She thinks that is a good idea.

If you say “It won’t hurt to do something” or “It never hurts to do something”, you are recommending an action which you think is helpful or useful.

It never hurts to ask.

It wouldn’t hurt you to be a bit more serious.

It doesn’t hurt to do something, also it doesn’t hurt to have something, means that it is an advantage to do or have, or cannot harm a situation.

I know he’s qualified for the job, but it doesn’t hurt that the company president is his mother’s best friend.

It doesn’t hurt to have money when you want to run for office.

Well, I hope you enjoyed learning that, because it never hurts to learn something new! 😉

Elections IV

Martin Luther King

Wow! What a great quotation at times of political turmoil here in Brazil.

At its best is an idiom and it means of or at the highest standard of quality possible.

Example: You’ll love their new album; it’s simply jazz at its best.

If we have a sentence like this: At best, Doug will be only an hour late. This means in the best possible scenario.

Now: He was never at his best early in the morning. It means he was never performing as well or effectively as he is able to, early in the morning.

Please, fill in the blanks!

Feel free to stop by anytime!

Estou muito feliz em concluir um bloco de estudos sobre phrasal verbs e idioms! São estruturas muito importantes da língua inglesa, que tornam a fala mais natural, e que devem ser aprendidas contextualizadas! As discussões necessitaram que aprendessemos , catch up, be up to sth and get backwrap up pass away. Seguimos com go through, off we go, and look forward to. Recentemente enviei uma mensagem a um aluno, dizendo que eu estava running behind schedule. Vimos ainda hurry up, write down, put together e take off.  Hoje veremos stop by.

Stop by

[informal]  If you stop by somewhere, you make a short visit to a person or place.

Perhaps I’ll stop by the hospital.
I’ll stop by to see Leigh before going home.
