Watch out! Pronunciation!
Olá pessoal! A pronúncia de vocábulos estrangeiros que entram no Português, sempre foi motivo de hesitação e controvérsia. De um lado, estão os progressistas, que defendem a forma adaptada, como no vocábulo /reCORde/, paroxítona. De outro, estão os conservadores, que defendem a forma tradicional, estrangeira, como /REcord/, com a tônica no /re/.
Encontrando-nos aqui no Brasil, em momento de muito uso do vocábulo impeachment, achei oportuno reproduzir a nota do colunista Valther Ostermann do Jornal de Santa Catarina, edicão de 16 e 17 de abril de 2016, juntamente com o resultado de minha consulta à Academia Brasileira de Letras.

Pergunta : O que pode ser exigido de um falante da
língua portuguesa, ao pronunciar palavras estrangeiras, como impeachment?
Deve ser fiel aos fonemas da língua inglesa, quando o vocábulo esta inserido
num discurso que se dá por meio da língua portuguesa?
Resposta : Prezado consulente, as palavras estrangeiras devem ser
pronunciadas exatamente como na sua língua original.
E aí pessoal? Simples, não?

The best way to find out is simply to ask people how – and how often – they would like to be contacted by you.
Some people prefer email. Others like social media. Some prefer the personal touch of a phone call. Others would hate to be called, but are happy to receive material through the mail.
Make sure you listen to their answer, and respect their decision – let their contact with you guide you on this.
What does “XOXO” mean?
Você pode ter se deparado com essa “palavra” no final de alguma carta, e-mail, SMS, ou até mesmo ter ouvido alguém soletrar enquanto se despedia de algum amigo “ecs ou ecs ou”.
Na verdade, XOXO não é uma palavra mas uma sigla que significa “abraços e beijos”ou em inglês, “hugs and kisses”. Ninguém sabe ao certo a sua origem mas existem duas teorias para explicar isso.
A primeira diz que X significa o abraço, e que os tracinhos representam os braços cruzados na hora do abraço. A segunda teoria diz que na Idade Média as pessoas costumavam colocar nos envelopes uma cruz para simbolizar a honestidade e um beijo para representar a sinceridade. Neste caso a letra X significaria o beijo, já que a maioria da população não sabia ler nem escrever.

Valentine’s Day in Brazil

The Brazilian “Dia dos Namorados” is celebrated on June 12th. But, that is only in Brazil. In other parts of the Western world the traditional date is February 14th, St. Valentine’s Day or just Valentine’s Day.
Its origin is in the pagan parties of Lupercalia in Old Rome, which happened in the middle of February. The feasts were to honor the God Lupercus so that no harm would come to the flocks and shepherds, or the goddess of love Juno Februata.
In these festivals, the young women would write their names in pieces of paper or cloth and put them in a jar. The young boys would draw a name and the boys and girls who were matched would be considered partners for the year, which at that time began in March.
There were two reasons for the change of the celebration date in Brazil. The first was to boost sales in June and second to take advantage of the proximity of June 13th, Saint Anthony’s day (Saint Anthony is the patron saint of weddings).
The success was not immediate. Only after many years June 12th became synonymous of romance in Brazil. However, unlike the Brazilian version of Valentine’s Day where presents are given to boyfriend/girlfriend, or husband/wife, it is the custom for people in European countries to give presents not only to their sweethearts/loved ones but also to the ones they like most, such as their parents, brothers, sisters or friends.
